How Does a Blender Work?

A modern blender or liquidiser is used to mix ingredients, puree foods and perform many other useful tasks. Food or liquid placed in a blender is quickly processed based upon the speed set by the user.

How a Blender Works is fairly simple, they use small motors to power blades that chop, and slice food. A blender's blade sits inside the jug on the base and is connected to a motor shaft.

The speed of the blade is controlled by one or more switches that increases or reduces electric current to the motor. More current means a higher motor speed. The motor can blend most liquids easily, but it's not designed for high power. When we put too much food in the jug, the motor can become overloaded and burn out.

Blender Repair

Your blender's power cord, its motor, the multi-speed switch or fuse can all fail. Seals can leak, so always make sure you keep them as tight as possible. Parts do become worn, but regular maintenance can limit the repairs to your blender, and keep it working well for years!

If the blender fails and doesn't work at all, first be sure that you have the power switched on and that outlet is working correctly (try switching on a different appliance to be sure).

Unplug and set the blender jug to one side. Now, Turn the base over and locate the screws. Unscrew them to remove the base.

To find the multi-speed switch, release the screws from the facing. Take off the jug base and the drive stud, and remove all washers. You should now be able to check all wires and components for faults and ware.

  1. Feeder Cap Doubles as a measuring cup, and lets you add foods while blending

  2. Cover

  3. Blender Jug Holds 5 cups (1.25 L). Helps user estimate measures.

  4. Lug Contacts stop to prevent turning.

  5. Sealing Ring Seals jug and agitator blade assembly.

  6. Agitator Blade Create blending action.

  7. Container Bottom Holds container assembly together and positions container assembly on motor base.

  8. Stop Keeps Container from turning in base

  9. Motor Base Has a powerful two-speed motor that is the heart of the appliance. To maximize efficiency, only use the recommended processing amounts identified in the instruction manual.

Blender Fault Finding

Your blender runs, but the blade doesn't turn

The cause is probably a loose coupling, or drive-stud. These parts are located just below the jug.

Remove the base and turn your blender over so that you can see the motor drive-shaft. Grip the drive-shaft with pliers and turn the blender on its side to attach a wrench to the drive stud. Now hold the drive-shaft steady as you turn the stud clock wise. If the drive-stud is heavily worn and hard to tighten, you will need to replace the blender part.

If the drive-stud turns but the blade assembly does not, inspect the assembly socket into which the drive stud fits. This may also need replacing if worn.

Metal drive-studs and a plastic blade assembly socket is often the problem in a blender.

Your blender's motor does not run

First, check the power supply. Make sure the socket is actually working, and that the power cord is in good order. If all looks good, go ahead and take a closer look at blender repair.

Start by checking its blade. Try the motor without your jug in place, if it works without the jug then it probably just need a clean, follow our blender cleaning guide.

If this doesn't work, you may have blown a fuse. The fuse is normally joined to the power cord, within the base. Or it could be a faulty multi speed switch.

You hear a humming sound, but the blades don't turn

If the food you are blending is too thick you could be overloading your. If this is not the case then it could just need cleaning, follow our blender cleaning guide.

Your blender works at one speed but not another

Check the multi-speed switch; you will need to replace this blender part if it is not working. And check out the wires to make sure they are not faulty.

Your blender is leaking

This usually means that a seal has worn. Try tightening the blender base, if this doesn't stop the leak replace the seal and/or blade assembly. It is also possible that your jug could have a small hairline crack, check this carefully and you will need to replace the jug if necessary.
