A Blender Cleaning Guide

Blender cleaning is so important to keep your machine looking as good as new!

We all love our smoothies. Fresh strawberries, mixed with yogurt, ice and a handful of nuts, can make a wonderful treat. But the hard part is trying to get all the bits of strawberry and nut out of your blender!

Cleaning a food blender can be easier if it's done right after use. But if you have guests or you are a little short on time, follow this simple blender cleaning guide to keep your machine in tip top condition!

Cleaning The Blender Jug

Blender jugs can be etched and scratched by washing in the dishwasher, and over time the blades will become dulled. Hand washing is quick, and is our preferred way of cleaning a blender and keeping it looking new.

  • Make sure the jug is seated firmly on the base before you proceed.
  • Fill half way with warm water, and then put in two or three drops of dish washing liquid.
  • If you have it to hand, pop in some lemon, as lemon rind will help to knock off food particles, and the lemon juice is good for eliminating odours.
  • If you didn't get time to clean your blender after use, and it has sat for hours without being cleaned, you may have more to contend with, if so just mix in a little baking soda.
  • Put the lid back on the blender and switch on the power.
  • Make sure the jug spout is closed, then select the lowest blend position and run for around 20 seconds.
  • Check that all of the particles have been caught; if so pour the liquid away.
  • Next give your blender jug a thorough rinse under cold water.

Cleaning The Blender Base

  • Ensure that your blender is un-plugged from the power socket!
  • Place the jug upside down and wipe down the base of your blender with a warm, damp cloth.
  • Do not sub-merge the motor/base in water (it's not safe to put it in the dishwasher either). A simple wipe down is all that's needed.
  • It's also advisable to wipe down the power cord periodically and to check it for damage.

Internal Blender Cleaning

  • Remove the blender from the base.
  • Take off the lid and unscrew the bottom component.
  • Remove the gasket seal and the blade, making sure that you are very careful when handling the blade.
  • The blade, the seal and locking ring all need to be cleaned periodically. Use warm soapy water, then rinse thoroughly and dry.

Final Tips

  • It's good to clean as quickly as possible after use, this will avoid food particles drying and sticking to your blender.
  • If the blender is extremely dirty, or you've just taken it from storage, add a mixture of water, vinegar, baking soda and soap to your mix. Blend for one minute, leave it to soak over night, then blend again, this can work magic!
  • Some blender lids come apart into two pieces. Check your manual to see if this applies, if so taking it apart and cleaning each part separately will maximise your blender cleaning efforts.
